On Wednesday, I decided to try out using paddles. I had bought some online at www.swimoutlet.com (sidenote if you haven’t checked out this site, you should! great deals).
It wasn’t in my swimming plan for the day to try them out, but I thought, hey why not. My swim plan on Wednesday was to do a bunch of 50’s, so I thought I would do some with and some without. Holy cow, was there a difference! To all those people who have used paddles your probably like duh, and yes I obviously figured I was going to go faster and take less strokes this all was obvious but the feeling in the water after taking them off was unreal. I felt like I was just gliding my hand through the water, even if I pulled as hard as I could. My hand was like a knife slicing through the water. After taking the paddles off, I also felt like I was going at a turtle’s pace. But I wasn’t, it actually was a great teaching tool, and the paddles were helping me get stronger.
The next day, Thursday, I headed to the pool for another workout. This time no paddles at all. I got faster practically overnight. It was crazy. I was definitely super sore from yesterdays workout, but I cut my time down by another 5 seconds per 100. I felt strong and fast, and I left the pool with a really happy smile on my face! I did 2800yds in 1hr, practically the best swim workout I’ve ever had since I started swimming in December.
Have you used paddles before? What devices have you used to improve your swim, and how have they helped?
