Santa Cruz – Road Trip Day 3 + 4

Road Trip Day 3

Santa Cruz We started our road trip out in San Diego and drove up to Santa Cruz to photograph a wedding. (You can read about our first 2 days here). We stayed at a cute beach hotel right in Aptos called The Rio Sands Hotel. It was convenient, clean, and just what we were looking for.

On Friday, we slept in a bit, and had a relatively lazy morning. After our fun sunset cruise on Thursday night, I was excited to ride my Felt Bicycles road bike loaner from Revolution Bike Shop more on Friday. It is just so fun to ride a road bike! I needed to get some water bottle cages, so we stopped by Spokesman Bicycles in downtown Santa Cruz. Prior to leaving for the day, I had looked up different routes to ride in the area, and had found one that sounded perfect. When we were at check out though with my bottle cages, we started chatting to the guy checking us out and he said, “oh no, you don’t want to do that route.” haha. We looked at each other and kind of laughed, and thought good thing we came in!

The locals really do always know best, don’t they? He gave us a really simple and cool route that ended up taking us on the most magical day of cycling. We spent the first half of the day just climbing and climbing and climbing. At first I was a bit nervous since I’ve been dealing with this ITband injury, but the road bike position made me feel great! I honestly think not being so tight in my hip flexors in my bike position on a road bike really helped. My tri bike position is relatively aggressive, pinching my hip flexors often and a lot, so having that breathing room on a road bike just felt amazing. Plus, climbing on a road bike vs. a tri bike is unreal. I forgot how much fun it is to climb when on a road bike! I need one in my life. Bummer, I have to give this one back. haha.

We packed up the car and headed to Safeway in Felton where we would start our ride. Here is the route we took:

Zayante Route

When leaving Safeway toward Graham Hill Rd, take a left onto Graham Hill Rd. toward Zayante.

Left on Zayante (from Graham Hill Rd)

Climb Zayante til you hit a fork (go right – when you think you should go left – GO RIGHT :)) on Skyline Rd

Right on Skyline Rd

Climb Skyline until you reach Highway 9. Go left on highway 9, and then descend your way back to Graham Hill Rd.

Left on Graham Hill Rd, and then a left into the Safeway parking lot!

Zayante Route

Starting Point – Safeway in Felton on Graham Hill Rd.

Zayante Route

When you get to the top of Zayante – go right up Skyline Blvd (don’t go left on Bear Creek)

It was super cruisy and really fun! And by cruisy, I simply mean our pace, because the ride itself is not easy. It is a lot of climbing, and there were a few times where you felt like you were going 100% up with your back leaning back as far as you could without falling backwards. It was totally vertical. In reality it was probably a 12% grade, but it felt steeper than that. ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol.

We rocked our new La Passione Kits that we LOVE. Ladies, I ordered an XS in the men’s and it fit great! They make women’s, but I just loved this design and wanted to be twinning with Toph. ๐Ÿ˜› When we got to a stopping point on Skyline Blvd, we pulled over for a JoJe Bar for some fuel. ๐Ÿ™‚

As we were nearing our ride, we stopped by a local market and grabbed a little pick me up. We aren’t in crazy training mode, so we thought. Why not?

It was a really fun day! We refueled at StonyBrook Restaurant for a beautiful dinner, and then got some sleep because Saturday was going to be a big day.

Road Trip Day 4

Our day started with packing and a 10-15min strength, and then we headed out to the wedding site. We spent the whole day shooting the most beautiful wedding. The festivities began at noon with photos and all that jazz, and we finished up at 11:15pm, and hit the road to drive to Bend for another wedding that was at 6pm on Sunday.

More to come on our Bend adventures, stay tuned!
