Adventure vs. Routine – Dealing with the Ebbs and Flows of Life

Adventure, Routine, Adventure, Routine.

I find myself constantly craving adventure, and then constantly craving routine. It’s an inner struggle. But, what if we stopped struggling? What if we just let go and let it be. There is no right or wrong. You are not bad or good. Feelings are not bad or good. They just are. When you crave adventure embrace it, when you crave routine embrace it. It’s okay to ebb and flow through our desires, but somewhere within that we have to find balance and acceptance. We have to stretch ourselves to be better than our thoughts. We have to retrain the mind to think positively and to let go of any expectations.

I personally dream on a daily basis of traveling all over the world, riding bikes in far off lands, and camping under the stars on beaches and in the mountains. At the same time, I love the challenge of trying to complete an 8 week bikini series that requires structure and discipline. Or training for an Ironman that requires 3-6 months of discipline and structure.

So, how do we find balance in this crazy world?

I think that’s what I love about challenges. It gives us a starting place and an end place. Maybe it is challenging yourself to 60 days of routine, like following the Tone It Up Bikini Series or training for a marathon or triathlon. And then maybe for 8 weeks, it is challenging yourself to try to go somewhere you’ve never been each week for those 8 weeks.

Maybe it is having routine for 8 weeks, and at the end of the 8 weeks planning a trip to go somewhere full of your kind of adventure for a week or two as a way to find that balance. And then start a new 8 week challenge with routine – maybe it’s meditating for 15min every day.

One of the toughest parts of life, is when we beat ourselves up for craving different things, but I think it something that we all are challenged with. How often do we have plans of starting a diet, only to have our friends invite us out for a girl’s night out on the town that inspires sabotage. Or date night, happy hour, you name it. I think that’s where we have to let go of any expectations or what we think we “should” be doing and do what feels right to us. What makes us happy. Let go of what anyone else thinks, what you think other people think, and focus on you.

We are constantly being told to find “balance”. But balance can look different to every one. How do we find balance between trying new things and living the simple life? I don’t have the answer, but I’ve found that planning some kind of trip every 2 months or so, gives me the balance I crave between adventure/travel and routine back at home.

How do you balance your cravings for adventure and routine?
