I can’t believe it’s 2 weeks til Desert International Triathlon, my first race of the season! I’m itching to get back out there and race, but my training so far hasn’t been without a few setbacks. I love this race because it’s a good benchmark race. To see where you are at, and then work on improving from there the rest of the year. There’s nothing like having the opportunity to give it all you have and see what you are capable of. The first year I did this race, I finished in 2:18:34, and the second year I did it (last year), I finished in 2:16:14. It would be kind of cool to improve by another 2min this year, but who knows. I took a BIG chunk of last year off, which definitely is making getting back into shape this year a bit of a challenge, but I love a good challenge, and I love seeing progress. 🙂
With two weeks to go, it’s an exciting opportunity to continue to dial my training in, and see what I can do out on a course that I’m familiar with. The best part about Desert Tri though is all the familiar faces. It is definitely not a race to miss because you get to race with all your friends. And the scenery is pretty beautiful. Topher and I will most likely be heading out on Friday, in hopes of cheering on our legendary mentors, Jim and Kris Riley, in the Sprint distance triathlon. Jim Riley hasn’t done a triathlon since he completed Kona in the early 90’s. And Kris, a superstar triathlon bunny, will be coming out of her race retirement, as well, having finished multiple marathons, and continuing to train like a rockstar triathlete, she’ll be making her sprint triathlon debut.
Topher and I will be racing in the International Distance. Topher, after being setback with multiple knee injuries last year, he is looking forward to having fun out on the course, and just enjoying being relatively pain free!
