Workouts of the Week + Valentine’s Day <3

This week was not a typical week of workouts simply because I had sprained my ankle during my long run on Sunday. Which was such a bummer because I was really getting into the swing of things, but I wasn’t going to let it get me down. I mean, injuries are silly, and they are just minor challenges along the way that we get to overcome. I always say, the sweet isn’t so sweet without the sour. 🙂 After some mega rehab on Sunday night and all day Monday, it was time to get in the pool. But, Tuesday, I still didn’t feel great, and work has been crazy busy, so I ended up taking Tuesday off, as well. It’s tough to take 2 rest days in a row as a triathlete. We get so used to working out every day if not 2x a day, that two rest days is like, woah! By Wednesday, I was chomping at the bit to get back after it. I knew pushing off the wall was going to be a bit difficult, and painful, but swimming was the best place to go to keep my fitness that I’ve gained, and keep the momentum going.

Overall, I focused on just trying to stay positive and get in what I could to keep moving. I also started focusing on my nutrition more. I hadn’t totally dialed that in yet, as it’s sometimes hard to get back into the swing of things after the holidays. We had been eating healthy, but we were still eating out a bit, and getting Lindor chocolates from Seaside whenever we got the chance. So, it was time to get real. Having a support system truly is the key in long term success. We all have natural motivation but there are times when we don’t want to get up or we just need an extra nudge, and it goes both ways. So, it’s always nice to have people who want to live the same lifestyle as you, so that you can be inspired and stay motivated. I haven’t felt this good in a long time. Work is great, blogging is awesome, training is awesome, and personal life is awesome. I’m really just enjoying all this awesomeness and going with it, and taking the sour whenever it comes, because it will come, we just have to be willing to accept it and move on vs. dwelling on it.

This week I tried Skratch with all of my workouts. I used the chews and hydration formula, and I can’t tell you how big of a difference it made. I felt awesome and never had any stomach problems, plus it tastes really great, too! 🙂 I’ll tell you how I incorporated it each day this week.

Here’s how this week’s workouts went:

Monday – rest day. Ice bath, ice, doing the ABC’s with my ankle, and Topher massaged the crap out of it to help push the swelling out. And holy crap was that good because on Tuesday it was nearly half the size as it was on Monday.

Wednesday – 3400yd swim – I did a 1000yd warm up, and then did 6×400 using a pull buoy and occasionally a snorkel 🙂 I had a packet of energy chews prior to my swim. I usually don’t eat before I swim, since it’s so early in the morning, but it’s amazing how much more energy you have when you put a little energy into your body. I do struggle with stomach issues when I’m in the pool, I just have a sensitive stomach and get motion sickness easily, but I felt great with the Skratch chews. Later that day I did a 35min aerobic trainer set. I wanted to try Zwift, a virtual indoor cycling program. I liked it, my power and speed were fairly accurate. It’s all bluetooth. We did have some crashing issues with getting it set up and installing the program, but it eventually worked. 🙂 It was too short to have any nutrition, so I just drank some water afterwards.

Thursday – rest day – the day got away from me with work and I just didn’t get anything in, but I also thought that with my ankle another rest day this week is ok. I’d rather get this thing healed than have it hurt for even longer.

Friday – Swam 3400yds and ran for 30min. Again, I had a few Skratch energy chews before my swim, and then a couple before my run, just to make sure I was energized, as I didn’t eat very much this day. Ankle was feeling better and could start to push off the wall with both feet, but still didn’t use my left foot all the way. It still hurt when I was kicking, so I opted to use a pull buoy for most of the swim again. Easy run, nothing major, just getting the blood flowing.

Saturday – 3 1/2hr ride (56 miles) of awesomeness. Topher, his dad, and I went out to ride (we missed Kris on our ride, but she came down with a bout of vertigo), and along the way we ran into Katya and Beth and Courtney and lots of other friends. It was so great to see everyone out and about. And we were all heading the same way randomly, too! It made for some positive energy and a fun ride. Toph and I then hopped off our bikes and went out for a 30min brick run. I took it easy and averaged just under 9min/miles for 3.5 miles. I had two full bottles of Skratch hydration and also a packet of energy chews on the ride. And then I had a few more energy chews right before we head out on our brick run.

Sunday – We were energized from our ride and run on Saturday, and Toph and I wanted to carry that into the “Day of Love” on our run. Along the way, we said “Happy Valentine’s Day” to every single person we saw. It was so fun to see people smile. We don’t do it enough (say hi to strangers, that is). It definitely set the tone for the rest of the day. It was just so much fun to feel the love all around. <3 We went for an easy 1hr run and then enjoyed the rest of the holiday. The first stop was heading to Luke’s and Beth’s for a mini garage sale to pick up some new triathlon gear that they were selling! Here we are rocking our new “Beth and Luke” kits. #feelingcool #lookmomnohands!!!!

It was a perfect time for a rest week, given that I had been putting in a good chunk of hours the last few weeks. It was nice to let my body absorb the fitness I had been gaining, and now it’s time to put it back to work over the next few weeks. 🙂 As always, I refueled my body with my fave: designer protein. I just can’t get enough. I struggle with stomach issues a lot, and this protein is the best I’ve ever had. I’m not gassy or bloated or crampy or anything, which is sometimes how I feel after certain protein powders. They have a lot of awesome options, both plant based proteins, as well as whey, but the awesome thing about their whey is that it’s lactose free! I just feel really good and happy after having it and it gives me energy. 🙂

Yea, I sprained my ankle, and it’s been no fun, but I’ve been able to keep up with my fitness and keep getting after it, so I’m happy with how the week turned out.
